about the artist

I was born in New York City and live and work in the rich cultural environment of Carnegie Hill on the Upper East Side. I was encouraged to paint from a very early age. My artist parents began taking me to the Museum of Modern Art (where they met!) when I was only four years old. This immersion in modern masterpieces set a standard for my work, and evolved into a lifelong practice of finding inspiration in masterpieces of all times and cultures.

As a teenager I studied oil painting with Jacob Lawrence. I attended Queens College of the City University of New York, where I received a solid and highly valuable grounding in formal principles, and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education. I enhanced this training with additional studies at New York University, the Brooklyn Museum School, The Art Student's League, and the University of Massachusetts. In l970 I earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Cincinnati, where I had been awarded a full tuition scholarship and teaching assistantship. My style flourished in this less structured format, becoming more abstract and personal. I taught art to children before and after graduate school, where my goal was always to create an atmosphere conducive to self-expression.

In 1974 I began creating and selling textile designs to women's clothing companies. This developed into a highly regarded textile design studio, which I ran for twenty-four years. I styled and sold the work of an international stable of textile designers. Many prominent companies and clothing designers, including Oscar de la Renta, Marimekko, Karl Lagerfeld, Ann Taylor and Bloomindales used designs from my collection. My own designs received an industry nomination, and were featured on the Merv Griffin show, as well as in such major publications as the New York Times, Harper's Bazaar and Women's Wear Daily. My background in fine art immeasurably supported the quality of my designs, as well as those of the designers who I represented. In return, this intense involvement in the very rich world of pattern exerted a profound impact on my painting, which always continued alongside.

I have been in a number of group shows over the years, including the Sixth Annual Outdoor Exhibition of the Nassau County Cultural Committee, where I won first prize for an abstract watercolor. In 1979 I was awarded the Hudson River Museum Contemporary Artist's Award, and the Hudson River Museum Purchase Prize, for one of my irridescent 'X' paintings. My work is owned by many private collectors.
